Vitamins for headaches, such as B2 and niacin may provide headache relief.

Good nutrition is the foundation to good health. For each one of us to function property we need a sufficient supply of over forty key nutrients. The bottom line is, vitamins are essential to you, and me for health and growth. Minerals such as magnesium for migraines, and herbs such as Feverfew and Butterbur help in controlling headaches.

All of us can suffer if we don't receive enough of the right vitamins. In this fast paced world we live in, eating right or taking a vitamin supplement are often forgot. Information on vitamins alone, and their role in our body could take several pages to write about. That's how important they are to us. But will vitamins help headaches? The answer is yes.


Studies have been conclusive that two vitamins for migraines and headaches are especially helpful.

They are vitamin B-2 Riboflavin , and also Niacin B-3. Many Multivitamins contain 100% of the daily intake that is recommended for that specific vitamin. If vitamins are taken, especially multivitamins, they have 100% of the daily dose for some vitamins while others may be a less percent than daily recommended.

On mine for instance, it has 100mg of magnesium, but that's only 25% of the recommended daily dosage. The daily dose for relief of migraines and headaches would be around 400mg taken for several months.


The top vitamin for headache hands down, is B2 or Riboflavin, and evidence shows that a migraine sufferer may have a lifelong deficiency of some forms of this vitamin.

If you don't remember how you got a bruise, you may need more vitamin C. Although not recommended for headaches nearly as much as B-2, vitamin C is essential for:


  • Formation of connective tissue, and bones
  • Required for synthesis of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, and serotonin.

Serotonin plays an important role in migraines.

Don't take to much of vitamin C. Over 400mg, and the body won't use it. Also, if taking vitamin C and antacids, the antacids will neutralize the vitamin, therefore making it ineffective.

Scientific studies have shown that a deficiency in vitamins for headaches, and mineral deficiency can trigger migraines and certain types of headaches.

In one such study, adults with a history of migraines, and tension type headaches were found to have significantly lower levels of magnesium than other people their same age. This important mineral has several hundred different body functions, such as to help stabilize the size of blood vessels, alter the function of serotonin, and prevent blood platelets from sticking together. A magnesium deficiency can lead to vasoconstriction, and inflammation of the nerve endings that supply blood to the neck, and head region, therefore triggering migraines.

Study after study has shown that vitamins for headaches, such as B-2, and B-3 work, herbs for headaches and migraines give relief, and also minerals for migraines (magnesium), work. It generally takes up to three months to observe relief when taking vitamins for migraines, just as it does in most migraine preventives medicines.

We think a more natural approach for migraine prevention, such as vitamins, and herbs may be a start for headaches before starting on preventive medicines. If this doesn't work then see a headache specialist to get the appropriate treatment. Don't suffer needlessly.

The big difference is prescription medicine such as migraine preventives can cost hundreds of dollars a month. Vitamins for headaches is only going to be a fraction of that without the side effects of the prescription drug.
