Visual Migraine Also Called Migraine With Aura..

Eye Migraine

What are visual migraines?

A visual-migraine is the perceptual disturbance experienced by some migraine sufferers before a migraine headache. It's also called an optical migraine, or ocular migraine. It often comes on as the perception of a strange light, an unpleasant smell or confusing thoughts or experiences.

It can also be experienced by some people with epilepsy before a seizure. When occurring, auras allow epileptics time to prevent injury to themselves.

The aura, or visual headache sensation can include some or a combination of the following:

  • Visual Changes
  • Bright lights
  • Zigzag lines
  • Distortions in the size or shape of objects
  • Scintillating scotoma
  • Shimmering, pulsating patches, often curved
  • Tunnel vision

Around twenty to thirty percent of individuals who suffer with migraines have aura. They appear gradually over 5 to 20 minutes and generally last less than sixty minutes. The headache phase of the migraine attack usually begins within sixty minutes of the end of the aura phase, but it's sometimes delayed up to several hours, and it can be missing entirely.

Migraine aura can be visual, sensory, or motor in nature

Visual aura is the most common of the neurological disturbances.

There's a disturbance of vision consisting usually of:

  • Unformed flashes of white,  or black but rarely of multicolored lights.
  • Formations of dazzling zigzag lines often arranged like the battlements of a castle.

Some visual migraine sufferers complain of:

  • Blurred or shimmering  or cloudy vision, as though they were looking through thick or smoked glass.

Motor disturbances can be:

  •  A feeling of pins and needles in the hand and arm, as well as in the nose, and mouth area.

Other symptoms of the aura phase can include:

  • Auditory or olfactory hallucinations
  • Temporary dysphagia
  • Vertigo
  • Tingling or numbness of the face and extremities
  • Hypersensitivity to touch
  • Weakness, and unsteadiness.

Several symptoms can be experienced from visual-migraines.

If you're driving and have an attack, pull over to the side of the road and wait until the visual part disappears.  A trip to the doctor to confirm it's a visual migraine will be in order. A headache specialist will know the medicines to administer to prevent this migraine attack. Knowing the migraine symptoms, the triggers, and the treatment will be helpful at preventing migraines.

As with any migraine, being on the look out for known migraine triggers will help. Our friend has visual headaches that are provoked by eating something such a weenie on a hot dog. The MSG (Monosodium Gultamate does this to him)

Our next page covers a very painful headache called the cluster headache, and our last page brushes up on the different types of headaches. Home page from visual migraine. Web site about ocular headaches.
