Riboflavin Migraine: Will Riboflavin Ease Pain?

Riboflavin migraine is actually taking riboflavin or B2 for migraines.

B2 is a vitamin that plays an important role in our bodies. Someone that sufferers with migraines, may have a higher need for this vitamin, and if there's a deficiency of Riboflavin, this may be the reason for those migraine attacks. A deficiency can cause blood vessel dilation. And you know what that starts in migraine sufferers?

Does Riboflavin help prevent migraine attacks? The best way to answer that is through studies that have been done on Riboflavin for migraines.

One such study was done on fifty four migraine sufferers. Giving 400mgs a day, for three months in a randomized controlled trial using Riboflavin and placebo, fifteen percent of the placebo users responded positively, while a whopping 59 percent of the Riboflavin had significant amount of migraine relief, with no major side effects.

A further study giving Riboflavin migraine to people that knew what they were taking, riboflavin decreased their headache attacks to one half of what they had been having each month. Riboflavin also reduced the frequency, duration, and intensity of their headaches.

If a migraine attack is in progress, the pain and length doesn't change, even if you're taking Riboflavin.

Most vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements are reasonably priced compared to any medicines a doctor prescribes, and have been around much longer. Remember, on our feverfew page how this herb had been used for hundreds of years to fight migraines and headaches.

A headache sufferer could start with supplements such as:

The herbs have been used for centuries for relieving symptoms and the pain of migraines.

Migraine preventives can be taken with supplements.

If riboflavin is taken with preventives such as beta blockers they work through different physiological mechanisms and can result in better Riboflavin migraine prevention.

How would someone know if they had a Riboflavin deficiency, and what would be the Riboflavin deficiency symptoms?

If there's a Riboflavin deficiency, there may be:

  • Dry or scaling skin.
  • Fluid in the mucous membranes.
  • Iron deficiency.
  • Anemia
  • Cracked and red lips.
  • Inflammation of the lining of the mouth and tongue.
  • Mouth ulcers, cracks at the corners of the mouth, and a sore throat.
  • The eyes may become sensitive to bright light, be bloodshot, itchy, and watery.

(A Riboflavin deficiency in animals can result in death)

A deficiency of riboflavin can be either primary, which could be caused by poor vitamin sources in a daily diet, or by a secondary condition, that affects the absorption in the intestine, the body not being able to use riboflavin, or an increase in the excretion of the vitamin from the body.

Dosage for riboflavin

Riboflavin migraine dosage will be 400mg a day for three months in order to help migraines.

( Some may be taking a multivitamin a day, and it has riboflavin in it). My one a day multivitamin only has 1.7mgs in it. You can see how little riboflavin is in it compared to 400mg a day.

Riboflavin is not toxin when taken orally, nor any riboflavin side effects have been observed.

We have a friend that says he has to take 400 Mg a day to keep the nerves from hurting in his feet. He said if he stops taking it, he can hardly walk. He found out about riboflavin for nerve pain from a coworker that was taking it.

Riboflavin migraine foods that are high in B-2:

  • Milk products such as yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese.
  • Meat, and fish.
  • Green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, and green beans.
  • Mushrooms
  • Almonds
  • Bananas.
  • And one we all like popcorn, just to name some foods that have B-2 in them.

Riboflavin is continually excrete through urine. Not only does vitamin B-2 or riboflavin play a role in headaches, riboflavin also plays a key role in energy metabolism, and for the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins.

A riboflavin deficiency can be because someone has diabetes, chronic heart disease, a bowel disease, and even HIV.

We hope this has provided some useful info about Riboflavin migraine. Headache and migraine sufferers can't turn their back on proven and tried methods for headache relief such as vitamins, herbs, and natural remedies for their migraine relief.

Sometimes, mismanagement of migraines and headaches may take a while to correct.
