That said, let's go to that visual migraine. It is annoying, and the first time a person has this to happen to them can be very frighting. This migraine isn't like the common migraine, where the symptoms are nausea, and vomiting (wife has these).
What exactly is an optical migraine?
This headache, unlike the common migraine, involves an aura (visual)that has no pain from it. As with all migraine sufferers, symptoms vary with migraines.
No one Person has the same symptoms as another, and can be different with each attack.
If you have an optical migraine ,
it would be a good idea to take some pain medicine, or a preventive at the onset of the visual disturbance. If a headache precedes this, you are going to be caught unprepared. What are the visual disturbances that are so frighting?
The auras about always begin as small visual paths crossing the field of vision that slowly fade away. Did you have flashing lights that look like zigzag or fortress-like lights? In another page I told of talking to a young girl that explained the visual migraine to me. She had a headache for a couple of weeks, and then began experiencing the migraine with aura that was accompanied by a severe migraine. She had to go to the ER.
She said the visual disturbance was in both eyes, not in one eye like a optical migraine.
These optical attacks can last for several minutes, to almost an hour. And who really knows in certain ones. It may be longer.
They could last to the point where they could disrupt your daily activities, such as working, the ability to drive, reading, watching TV, or doing household chores.
Now be aware, if there is a change in the visual pattern, a doctor should be consulted in this case because visual changes can also be caused by partial seizures, a retina in the eye could become detached, or you could have a transient ischemic attack, or even a mini stroke.
You have optical migraine if the same aura is experienced over, and over, and you are a migraine sufferer. Is one person more likely to get an optical migraine than another?
Visual migraines are believed to be the constriction of blood vessels, which in turn reduces the flow of blood to your eye.
It's thought that certain foods, or everyday activities can trigger optical migraines.
Some say eating chocolate, nuts, and shellfish
while others say that red wine, caffeine, stress, menstrual, and eye strain can trigger a optical migraine.
If you are under forty, a woman, and have a history of migraine headaches in your family, you are more prone to these eye migraines. If you have more than a couple of these migraines a month find a good neurologist that deals in migraines for your treatment. The medicine your doctor will probably give you.
These will be to relive your eye migraines so they won't disturb you so much. You may be prescribed beta blockers, antidepressants, and antiepileptic drugs.
If you have severe headaches after your optical migraine, you could be given triptans for the pain. Sleeping, and resting in a dark room is often effective in relieving your symptoms.
