Migraine Symptoms Aren't Pleasant.. They're Nasty..

Migraine symptoms are different in each person.

Even the phases experienced, and the symptoms experienced during migraines, can vary from one migraine attack to another, in the same migraine sufferer.

There're two types of migraines. One is the common migraine (my wife has these). Not only will she have the pain, but she will have nausea, vomiting, her nose will be stopped up, and also tenderness on her head, due to the pain. These headaches generally last longer, and people have more of the common than the other type of migraines, which is the classic migraine.

The classic migraine is one type that is refereed to as migraine with aura, and more migraine symptoms then the common migraine.

We'll give the different phases, and the symptoms of migraines that can be had during that phase.

The first phase is called the prodrome. This can come about hours, or even days before the migraine. More than half of migraine sufferers experience these migraine symptoms:

  • Depression
  • Extreme happiness
  • More sensitive in what can be smelled, or light may be more worrisome.
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Increase of thirst.
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

Each person has their own specific set of symptoms that signal "migraine".

The next migraine phase is the aura of the classic migraine

This usually starts right before, or with the migraine headache. It will come on in five to twenty minutes, but it won't last more than an hour. This is the visual part. It's a possibility that you will see:

  • Bright lights
  • Half vision
  • Zigzag lines
  • Auditory, or olfactory hallucinations
  • Temporary dysphagia
  • Vertigo
  • Tingling or numbness of the face, and extremities
  • Hypersensitivity to touch.

Don't delay going to the Doctor. Some of the symptoms of migraines above are the same signs of a stroke or complicated migraines which are sub-types of migraines. As the name applies, complicated migraines are sometimes hard to pinpoint. Many Doctors may have a hard time figuring out what happened, and the right migraine treatment that's needed.

The next phase, and the symptoms that go with the headache.

This is the part where the migraine will throb. Pain can start on one side, and spread to the other. Sharp jabs, and jolts of sharp, shooting pain in different areas of the head are common.

The symptoms with the headache itself:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Nose may be stopped up
  • Diarrhea may be had
  • Neck may be stiff

The pain part is the worst of the migraine headache symptoms. The migraines usually last a day, but they can also last up to three days. Occasionally a migraine sufferer may be admitted to the hospital, and the pain cycle has to be broken. "We know one woman that this happened to".

The next phase is the termination, and the migraine symptoms to this.

This is the easing off of the headache stage. There are symptoms to this also:

  • This is the drained feeling
  • Irritability may be had

The next of the migraine symptoms is the postdrome phase called the "termination" or the last phase.

The prodrome is the start of your classic migraine, and the ending of it is the postrome. (If a migraine sufferer has the common migraine, the migraine with aura and symptoms would not be experienced.)

This is when it's finally over. You may feel tired or rough so to speak, and some of the symptoms may still linger. But then, some people feel unusually refreshed, or euphoric after migraine attacks. Your recovery will be different from others. No two migraine sufferers experience all of these symptoms.
