Six Migraine Herbs That Are Used For Pain and Nausea..

Feverfew Plant

Migraine herbs or herbs that relieve headaches and their symptoms have been used long before conventional medicine came along.

Several of these herbs are recommended by some doctors that recognize their ability to relieve migraines. Not to say that prescription medicines don't work, but for some sufferers the side effects of medicines may be more than they want to endure. Others may want more natural approaches for relief of their pain.

There're herbs and botanical's that are connected with migraine relief, but talk to the doctor before taking any herbs, if taking prescribed medicines. DRUG INTERACTIONS MAY OCCUR, and we don't want that.

Although most are safe to take, herbs and vitamins haven't been regulated by the FDA.  We'll address six migraine herbs with the top ones first.

Feverfew is # one on migraine relief.

Feverfew is a flowering plant that has been used since ancient times to treat migraines. Different studies have found that feverfew inhibits:

  • Both the brain chemical serotonin, and hormone like substances known as prostaglandins, and both are known culprits in the process of migraines.
  • One component in feverfew works on a specific brain chemical that's involved in the process of inflammation.

Possible side effects are increased bleeding if taking blood thinner, stomach upset, and pregnant women not recommended for. Allow around two or three months to see the full effect.

Number two on the migraine herbs list is butterbur.

Butterbur Plant

Butterbur is a herb that has been used as folk remedy for centuries to treat headaches, allergies, and other ailments. The scientific literature supporting the use of butterbur is stronger than feverfew.

Keep in mind that butterbur in its raw form has nasty toxins in it, but they're removed during processing. Don't home brew butterbur. You can't go around chewing on raw butterbur like peppermint. The products that are sold on the market are safe to take.

Number three on the migraine herbs is ginger for nausea.

Gingerbread Man

Ginger has many uses such as:

  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Preventing seasickness
  • Helping with digestion
  • It's effective because of its anti nausea, and vomiting
  • And its ability to inhibit platelet clumping, and that makes it effective in migraine treatment.

Some people experience heartburn while taking ginger. Also not recommended while pregnant or a history of gallstones.

Number four on the migraine herb list is peppermint.

You've tasted this refreshing herb in gum, candy, and even toothpaste. But peppermint has been used for centuries for:

  • Pain and to calm nerves, therefore helping to treat tension and TMJ headaches.

Don't ingest pure peppermint oil or menthol, both can be fatal. Don't use if gallbladder or bile duck inflammation is involved.

Number five on treatment with herbs is chamomile.

Chamomile is another herb (daisy like flower) that has long been used to treat:

  • Headaches
  • Calm nerves, and relieve tension
  • Common cold
  • Insomnia
  • Indigestion

Side effects are rare.

Number six on herbs that relieve migraines.

White willow bark is the origin of our modern day aspirin. White willow has been used for thousands of years to treat pain and fever. It contains salicin, which is a chemical closely related to the key component in aspirin. White willow can relieve different types of headaches.

Some more helpful migraine herbs are, Cardamom, Cayenne Pepper, Chamomile, Chaste Tree, Dill, Bay Laurel, Blessed Thistle, Lavender, Lime, Oregano, Passion Flower, Skullcap, and Wood Betony. All can be found at Amazon. Also reviews can be read.

Just as a side note, herbs were used for thousands of years in Asia and Europe for chronic and acute conditions, and was their main therapy. But herbs were pushed aside in the eighteenth century in favor of scientific medicine.
