Menstrual Migraine... What To Do For Them...
Menstrual migraine was on our last page, and we let you know about pain medicine, and preventive medicines to take, and what to take if your migraines don't respond to them. Let's cover these migraines some more.Did you know that it has been estimated that seventy percent of migraine sufferers are female? Out of these, sixty to seventy percent report a menstrual relationship to their migraine attacks. So the men have a break on this. Also, one of the top five most common disabling conditions in women are migraines. There are two different forms of menstrual headaches. For instance, if you experience migraines only during a five day period, but none the rest of the month, you have pure menstrual migraine aura. If you experience other attacks, you may suffer from menstrually-related migraine without aura. If you go to the Doctor, make sure you are specific about explaining this to him. He may want to treat the first with hormone therapy, and the second may be treated with Triptans. Be careful about taking hormonal therapy on a continuous basis, it may act as a fuel instead of a blanket, for your menstrual migraine. If you happen to use hormones for cramps, instead of this ask your Doctor if you can take a high dosage of anti-inflammatory
medication. One situation for hormone therapy. One situation that hormones can help control your migraines is when you have an irregular menstrual pattern. This happens in many women. My sister said she used to have a three week period. If this applies to you, "irregular menstrual pattern" have your Doctor give a short course of progesterone, or some other temporary hormonal therapy. Once you regularize an irregular menstrual pattern your menstrual headaches will be better. Just like disturbances in your sleep patterns, inconsistent meal patterns, and weather changes, your menstrual irregularity is no exception, you can get migraines from all of these.
Believe it or not, menstrual headaches are natural. You're probably saying "great", that's just what I needed to read. They really are natural, but (not necessary). The hormonal shifts just before, but also during, and right after menses, and these are your triggers for your migraines. Here is some food for thought. It's a well known fact, that you have triggers that raise your threshold level to the point of having migraines. Some foods, beverages, and even your lifestyle (stress) can be changed to help control the terrible pain of menstrual migraines. Before your menstrual cycle starts, look at the food trigger page we have, and print off everything that can trigger a migraine. Then see if you are doing "ANYTHING" on this page, that could be adding to your menstrual migraine. You may not hit on anything, then again it's worth a try. We hope you have a pain free day, because we know how unpleasant menstrual migraines are.All the best Our next page covers hormonal migraines, and our last page covered more info about menstrual migraines.
