Hormonal Migraines..What to do For These Migraines..

Hormonal migraines, particularly menstrual migraines, can have three causes.

These causes are unavoidable in women. If women are prone to headaches or migraines the head pain will be hard to avoid. The three causes of migraines are:

  • Estrogen levels drop immediately before the start of the menstrual flow. This is number one.
  • The second cause is the increase in prostaglandins that occur in the body. They are chemicals in the body that can cause inflammation and pain.
  • Number three is a magnesium deficiency during the period.

We've addressed the problems of a deficiency of magnesium in other pages, and found out that many migraine sufferers have low levels of this mineral that's so important to our well being.

What triggers hormonal headaches in women?

  • Birth control pills
  • Hormone replacement therapy during menopause has been found to give migraines to some women, especially if taking high doses of estrogen.

The number of side effects such as migraines, decrease in women who take birth control pills that have lower doses of estrogen.

Birth control pills containing progesterone will not give headaches. If taking birth control pills that are high in estrogen, mention progesterone to the Doctor.

One more possibility is by eating or drinking something that could be raising the threshold to unacceptable levels, and adding to the hormonal headaches pain level. Maybe remote but worth a look.

What to do for the second cause of hormonal migraine!

During the shedding of the endometrium, chemicals in the body, called prostaglandins, cause inflammation and pain. An over the counter pain reliever such as Advil, Motrin, Nalfon, Naproxen or Relafen. They're all good for fighting pain and infection. Take the pain medicine for several days before the hormonal migraine usually occurs.

If there's severe menstrual migraines involved or you want to continue taking birth control pills, a Doctor may recommend taking small doses of:

  • Ergotamine drugs
  • Beta-blockers
  • Anticonvulsants

We just gave a page on migraine meds, and we discussed the standard preventive medicines that are given for migraine relief, and these were on it.

Magnesium deficiency during the period.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals when it comes to controlling migraines, and a lack of magnesium in the body can cause undesirable symptoms, one being headaches. I was talking to a woman that was having terrible headaches. When they found her problem, she had a magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium is taken by mouth as a preventative, and intravenously as a migraine abortive if a trip to the hospital is needed to abort a migraine.

To prevent a migraine, begin taking a daily magnesium supplement, and increase it during the latter half of the cycle.

Magnesium plays a role in some three hundred different functions in the body. Hormonal migraines, and magnesium go hand in hand.

You can find a three in one supplement that is used for hormonal headaches. It's called Migravent. The amount in three capsules are Butterbur Extract 101mg, Proprietary Blend Riboflavin, B2, 133mg and Magnesium 109mg. Butterbur is a herb, B2 is a vitamin, and magnesium is a mineral. All help headaches. You be the judge on taking it. Results may be seen in as few as four weeks as it begins to build up in the system and start taking effect. It's recommended to continue taking Migravent daily for at least four to six months to reach maximum effectiveness.

If the pain is severe from the hormonal migraines, the preventive medicine in small doses may have to be taken. The supplements all are tried and tested, and may work without prescription drugs which come with undesirable side effects.

Hope this helped, thanks for reading.
