Will Headache Hygiene help Migraine Headaches?

Establish good headache hygiene.

Make it a daily routine to reduce the frequency, and intensity of headaches. Is this possible?

First, what is hygiene? We think of it as brushing our teeth, taking baths, and so forth. The definition of hygiene is a system of principles designed for the promotion of health. You'll understand after reading this page why this makes sense for the control of your migraines and headaches.

Taking care of headaches will be an improvement on health also. In short, headache specialists will tell you that it takes more than just migraine medicine to control headaches and migraines.

Tension headaches, migraine headaches, cluster headaches, or whatever headaches you've been diagnosed with, a commitment to healthy living is a dominate factor in controlling them. Establishing, and staying with a daily routine is important in headache care. Headache specialists now call it "headache hygiene".

Migraines love change and will show you in pain.

Print this dairy, and try to pinpoint what was consumed or come in contact with up to a day before the attack.

Migraine food triggers should be avoided for headache relief. Since it's thought that about a third of headaches are caused by foods, we should give that page a little thought.

Although low blood sugar can cause headaches, so can to much sugar, which can led to a rapid decline in sugar levels, and cause a headache.

Also connected with food is liquids. Drink plenty of water, so as not to become dehydrated, also a headache trigger.

Next on our headache hygiene list is sleep habits.

Two things here are getting enough sleep, and sleeping regular hours to avoid having a headache. Here are seven do able's:

  • Wake up at the same time every day.
  • Use your bed for sleep only.
  • Avoid caffeine at least sex hours before going to bed.
  • Don't drink any alcohol at least three hours before going to bed.
  • Go to bed only if you are sleepy.
  • Go through the same routine every night before you go to bed.
  • Take a warm bath before going to bed, or you could try drinking a warm glass of milk. Just leave a glass setting out for awhile.

Another headache hygiene is controlling stress.

Who doesn't have it? But for some, headaches are a result of to much stress. One of the simple ways of help reduce stress is exercise if a migraine isn't induced by physical activity that's had by some migrainures.

Find a exercise that you enjoy. Exercise with a friend or family member. Walking is a great exercise. Work out for thirty minutes if you can.

Understand stress symptoms.

The symptoms below may be due to stress. Here's some that you may never gave thought to. Do you have:

  • Anger
  • Confusion
  • Sadness
  • Fear or can't remember as well.
  • Clammy hands
  • Dry mouth
  • Tight muscles
  • Sleep problems
  • Skin rash
  • Avoid loved ones
  • Have eating problems
  • Depression
  • Turn to alcohol, or drugs

These could all be stress related.

You wouldn't call these stress triggers good headache hygiene either.

Some are money, or a like of it, finding out something is wrong with your health, and work is sometimes at the top of the barrel.

Other causes /triggers of stress are losing your job "big one", having a baby, moving, getting married. Then a common cause of stress is oversleeping, running late, your car breaking, and how about this one. Sitting in rush hour traffic.

All of these things are stressful, and also headache related.

For good headache hygiene, follow these steps.

  • Start with headache/migraine triggers, move to eating habits.
  • Get plenty of rest, and sleep, and above all reduce stress.

When you practice all of these and get in a routine (just like snapping a seat belt), you're going to see an improvement in those headaches.

Another good headache hygiene is deep breathing.

If you have paid attention, the more stress you have the faster you breath. Watch someone that gets angry. Stand or sit quietly and breath in through the nose, and push out the stomach as much as possible. Hold the breath for a few seconds and slowly breath out through the mouth. Pucker the lips like you would kiss your boyfriend/girlfriend so you can control how much air you let out. You've got it, now do this three of four times, several times a day.

Two more headache hygiene ways of reducing stress is self relaxation.

Try this. Sit and close the eyes and relax the right hand, and let it go loose. Say this to yourself, and also picture this in your mind. My right hand feels warm and heavy. Now repeat this for the arms, legs, and whole body. Also talk to your headache specialist to see if biofeedback would be helpful for you.
