This Chinese herbal supplement has a long history of use for  gynecological problems arising in women. It's also called angelic root by some people. Dong Quai is thought to be effective by balancing the hormone level in women.

  • Vitamin E helps eliminate hot flashes. Take up to 400 IU daily.

Dong Quai for PMS, or premenstrual conditions.

It's estimated that up to 40% of women experience PMS. Symptoms may include fatigue, swelling of the ankles and fingers, tender and enlarged breast, irritability, depression, mood swings, headache, nervousness, abdominal bloating, diarrhea, constipation, altered sex drive, backache, acne, and even cravings for sugar.

  • Licorice lowers estrogen and raises progesterone levels and reduces water retention. Take any of the following three times a day. One to two grams of powered root as tea, four milliliters fluid extract, or 250 to 500 MG of solid dry root.

The preferred forms of Dong Quai for premenstrual or PMS are capsules, tablets, extract, tincture, and powered root. Just follow dosage info on the package.

Possible side effects of Dong Quai.

In large doses it can cause abdominal bloating, and diarrhea. Taken as directed it's safe. Don't take if pregnant.
