The causes of migraines may be hard to find for some, or simple for others.

One could have a migraine cause that could be quite simple to find, for instance a migraine food that is causing their migraines, or some cause that may never be found, just treated. Treating migraines is sometimes like a puzzle. The pieces have to come together.

The treatments for migraines can range from prescriptions for migraines for migraine preventive medicine, to simply finding out what triggers your migraines. We think many migraine sufferers kind of put their migraines in their doctors hands. But 50% or more on finding a migraine cause is left up to you. You know what you do, your doctor doesn't. Simple fact is, no medicine will do it's best if one has a cause of migraines that can be found, and does nothing about it.

One may be allergic to something they drink, food, or even perfumes. Some triggers can be from the darnest things, we know because we've either received e-mails about them, or have friends that found theirs, and are literary migraine free because they avoid that trigger. Then again, we have friends that even know what causes their migraines, and still not put one hundred percent in avoiding the trigger, but suffer with the headache instead.

One should have a complete physical to rule out anything wrong inside of ones body that would produce headaches. Even elevated blood pressure can cause headaches.

Migraine is a disease, and a headache is only a symptom.

Unlike a headache, the Migraine disease has many symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, auras (light spots), sensitivity to light and sound, numbness, difficulty in speech, and severe head pain.

One Migraine attack alone can last for eight hours, several days, or even weeks. A Migraine is induced by various controllable and uncontrollable triggers. What we said above about finding triggers that you control, and the physical ones to look for.

Uncontrollable triggers include weather patterns, menstrual cycles for women, and controllable triggers are below.

This's why one needs a diary to add what they're doing before the migraine, to slice and dice, think, study, and ponder, and it may take awhile to come to the conclusion to the cause of the migraines, but one will have received a good reward.

Migraines are never a pretty picture, but before we get started on the causes of migraines, this is what I've seen in our many years of battling this disease.

There are the ones (mostly women) that we know that have had migraines for years, occasionally.

Then there are the ones like my wife's that start, and for some reason they keep getting worst, and nothing or no one can help. Makes you wonder, doesn't it. We hope yours is the occasional one. One can see by the list below why one needs a diary to keep track of what they do. To often we forget, so this is a good way to remember. Remember what you eat, and drink, before you get a migraine, jot it down, there may be something that has been overlooked."

A diary just doesn't apply to foods. It may be stress, or being exposed to anything. It boggles the mind knowing how many factors that can come together to give a migraine. Even keeping a journal in a notebook can accomplish results.

Remember, a migraine cause/trigger doesn't have to produce a migraine instantly. A migraine sufferer may have pain today, because of something that happened yesterday. They aren't like someone that's allergic to peanuts, or seafood, that can have a reaction instantly. Headaches may not start instantly, sometimes it's because of a trigger that one was exposed to sometime earlier. That's why migraines can be hard to track down.

We know of one woman that went on a diet, but started getting migraines. Headache

She went off her diet, and her headache went south,"aspartame maybe"? A lot of controversy over this additive about causing headaches. Other things that may be a factor in triggering migraines are,

#(2)Allergic reactions

#(3)Bright lights

#(4)Certain odors or perfumes

#(5)Changes in hormone levels (which can occur during a woman's menstrual cycle or with the use of birth control pills)

#(6)Changes in sleep patterns

#(7)Exercise

#(8)Loud noises

#(9)Missed meals

#(10)Physical or emotional stress

#(11)Smoking or exposure to smoke

#(12)Certain foods and preservatives in foods may trigger migraines in some people. Food related triggers may include.

#(13)Any processed, fermented, pickled, or marinated foods.

#(14)Baked goods for some

#(15)Chocolate doesn't like many migraine sufferers

#(16)Dairy products can cause headaches

#(17)Foods containing monosodium glutamate (MSG)

#(18)Foods containing tyramine, which includes red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs, and certain beans.

#(19)Fruits (avocado, banana, citrus fruit)

#(20)Meats containing nitrates (bacon, hot dogs, salami, cured meats)

#(21)Nuts

#(22)Onions

#(23)Peanut butter

#(24)You may also have a magnesium deficiency, get that checked. It will cause headaches or migraines.

Sometimes the migraine also occurs with no apparent"cause", so don't be discouraged if you don't find a migraine cause. A healthy lifestyle will produce some results.

The trigger theory supposes that exposure to various environmental factors precipitates, or triggers, individual migraine episodes, and in many migraine sufferers appears to be correct.

For my wife, it's things that may bother no one else, but will trigger her migraine, such as loud noises, a store, "lights" everyday stress, and one of the worst things is anger.

In two minutes her pain level can be a ten. You can see some people that you could not give a headache to, while others can sneeze and get a headache from it.

More causes of migraines Migraines can be caused by medical problems to. High blood pressure, or diabetes, anemia, or HIV.

One probably feels frustrated because they're having severe migraines, and are told over and over that everything appears to be normal, "and they know better".

One may feel misunderstood, and depressed. They shouldn't be, they're not in this alone. Loved ones are with them, and they see their pain.

And if we dig deep enough in to the causes of migraines, we'll find something that will help.

I will close with a true story. I know this woman, see her every couple of weeks.

She said that years ago, she started getting migraine headaches so bad, that she would have to go in a dark room, put wash cloths on her head, and it was like that quite often.

When she was checked, she found out she was allergic to aged cheese, she said she loved to eat it. She said when she stopped eating cheese, her migraines also stopped.

Also I know another women that was allergic to her sons cologne. Once he removed it from the house, she said her headaches stopped.

The causes of migraines can be found in some people "the triggers", so we should never stop looking. One of the other causes could be a sinus migraine headache, if you have pain and fullness in your face. More causes of migraines on our next page.

There's so many causes of migraines, it would be easy to miss some. Many migraine sufferers take preventive medicine that actually could work even better, or could be eliminated if they looked, and found the root cause for their migraines.
